STL police arrest suspect in killing of Bosnian store owner

Police have arrested a suspect in the attempted robbery of a convenience store that left one of the owners dead and his brother injured.

Police sources said they will be applying for murder charges at the city’s circuit attorney’s office later today against a 23-year-old man. The Post-Dispatch generally does not name suspects until they are criminally charged.

Haris Gogic, 19, was shot and killed, and his brother, Mirza Gogic, 23, was shot in the arm during the robbery attempt Friday at the Quick Stop convenience and wireless store they owned at Chippewa Street and Alfred Avenue.

Family members gathered at a vigil for the brothers Sunday said they rushed into the store upon hearing Mirza Gogic’s girlfriend screaming at about 11:40 a.m. She was working as a cashier while the brothers were inside the home, which is connected to the store, where they lived with their parents.

One grabbed a baseball bat and they rushed in. But the gunman opened fire, shooting Haris Gogic in the head and Mirza Gogic in the arm.

The family described the brothers as Bosnian immigrants who opened the store about four years ago and were living the American dream.
